    Deportations today

40+ Nigerian failed asylum seekers ( and others?) due to report today to Gardai for deportation, according to report in Irish examiner.

More than 40 Nigerians to be deported today | Irish Examiner

Besides Rosanna and her gang, I wonder how many will actually turn up? Does anyone know how to get the numbers on that?

Send them home including Rosanna. Your point on how many will turn up is well-made, and underlines the necessity for the immediate passage of the Immigration, Residence and Protection Bill which ends prior notice of deportation. It's at Report Stage at present. Contact the members of the Joint Oireachtas Cmtee on Justice, Equality and Womens' Rights to demand they not hold up this important piece of legislation. It began its passage in 2007 - enough of these delays.

You're letting yourself down there. Race isn't the issue, it's nationality and citizenship.

Dont even attempt to play that card. It is because of the likes of you we have had no real debate in this country about immigration and therefore we lack a proper system of immigration and integration. It's disgusting how these people have been treated in this country by the officials and that is completely down to the likes of you.

Total nonsense. Its because of inherent racism in the immigration services and because of under the table arrangements with the British not to let Ireland be a "back door" for immigration.

Do you think that they should receive citizenship? Why?

I'm not familiar with each individual case, but I don't know of any reason why they should be given citizenship.

As far as I'm aware they didn't apply for citizenship, they applied for asylum and their claims were rejected so now they have to go home. What's the big deal?

I know plenty of non-EU citizens that are living here legally and some who have gone on to claim citizenship (my own mother for example). What these people all have in common is that they entered the country in good faith and often secured employment before even entering the country. This is something that I imagine cannot be said for many of the people to be deported today, though I'm open to correction on that point.
