What has happened to the Civil partnership Bill?

After the last election and with much publicity we were told a Civil Partnership Bill would be a priority for the government. Then the Fianna Fáil backbenchers and church acted up and the Bill has never seen the light of day.

Does anyone know what has happened and why in 2009 such a basic civil right is being sat on by our government? Ask the canvassers at your door tonight!

Various FFers from my constituency (who are well connected to the current Minister for Justice) are confident that it is buried for the duration of this government.

Unlikely as it may seem but maybe the mandarins in Finance worked out how much tax maybe lost on its introduction - would be a little more novel to deny it on the recession than the nonsense in the constitution and the protection of marriage.

Amazing how FF can delay and slowly kill any social development or real equality in Ireland while the Green party lets it happen

I'm afraid that is politics. FF have lost most (if not all) of its young/trendy/liberal support. They are down to their socially conservative rural and lower working class roots. They will not antagonise these social conservatives unnecessarily.

It will take a new government to push legislation in this area.
