I think they will let it rest for now. It will reduce revenue from inheritence taxes, sick reason I know.

How did decriminalisation, anti-discrimination and equal age of consents come about?

they've been saying that since Michael McDowell was minister for justice.

It means that the 'Greens' have sold out on their 2007 election commitments, and instead of supporting gay marriage, they've latched onto to Civil Partnerships.

I had contact with the spokesman for Justice on this issue and frankly i find their response pitiful. They will NEVER receive my vote again (and not just on this issue btw!).

Yes because that is the biggest issue facing Ireland right now.

Hopefully, FG will pass the legislation in relation to civil unions despite it's large conservative rural support base also.

Whats the betting those opportunist c***s in FF will oppose civil unions when in opposition?

Every time someone accuses the Greens of having sold out, it always means that the Greens didn't get agreement on all their policies and had to settle for a compromise. What is a coalition government but a series of compromises? It would be lovely to live in this make-believe world where the party with 6 TDs gets all its policies accepted and the party with 78 gets none of theirs.

Not that I am a supporter of the Labour Party, they only way to get Civil Partnerships brought into legislation is to ensure that the Labour Party is in Government. FG released their policy document on Civil Partnership back in June 2004 during pride and after the local and european elections. Fine Gael are as commited to introducing Civil Partnership legislations as they are about going into a Natioanl Government with FF. Some of the Green Party membership stamped their feet and all they got was the head of bill.

You are incorrect. FG is committed to the introduction of civil partnerships. It was explicitly included in the manifesto and would have been in any programme for government.
