Absolutely, there was a fanfare in late 2007 and then it all went quiet. FF have little urban representation now at a local level and they are not going to touch this proposal with a 40 foot bargepole. I was pretty confident in 2007 with the greens pushing it that it would happen but then I saw the greens in government. Not going to happen.

I'm puzzled: how does it differ from the legislation that already exists for heterosexual couples then?

Another casualty of the change of priorities due to the recession. "It's the economy stupid".
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

They don't get all the benefits and its easier to leave the the partnership
If we were all born equal we would all be white, middle-class, middle-aged men!

Nonsense. Other legisaltion that does not deal with the economy is still going through. on top of that only two Ministers are meant to deal with the economic matters, so everything else should not be dropped.

Well, as a married heterosexual I don't think that's acceptable at all: what 'benefits' will couples (whether they be straight or gay) not enjoy under the new legislation that straight couples currently enjoy?

To my mind, with the noteworthy exception of the right to adopt, gay couples should enjoy all the benefits in law that heterosexuals do.

There is no such right. There is the right to apply to be considered for adoption. That is a very important distinction and makes it illogical why any couple to be discriminated against on the basis of the sexual orientation (or genders)

It's about priorities. FF's priorities are economic, The Greens are are environmental. Social legislation that impacts a few thousand people at most is not going to be high on anyone's agenda.

A government should have more then one priority. That is why we have more then one Minister. If the government wanted to pass a Civil Partnership Bill, they could start it tomorrow. There is currently a Nursing Home Bill going through the Seanad for example, which has nothing to do with the economy or the environment.
