2005 Crime figures released - Crime still soaring

    http://www.garda.ie/angarda/statisti...report2005.pdf

McDowell and the Garda Commissioner published this earlier, and it shows that crime is still on the rise.

The number of headline offences has risen by 3% - and has breached the 100,000 mark for the first time since 1994

The number of non-headline offences is up by an incredible 12%, in a single year

Detection rates remained at 35% - the same as last year, but still the lowest since the early 80s.

So overall, crime has risen by 12% under Fianna Fail and the PDs since 1997

And McDowell is running around challenging other parties to debate their records on crime?

And just to note, in the context of the recent debates on the issue:

5,456 serious offences were committed by people out on bail, an increase of 9% on the previous year

5% of all serious crime last year was committed by people out on bail

The population has grown considerably over the last number of years in line with the huge economic expansion the country has enjoyed since 1997. The census figures when published are likely to show that population has grown by more than 12% since the government was elected and therefore a normalised meaure of crime (number of crimes per 100,000 of population) would show that crime has actually fallen.

Fintan O Toole (hardly an unbiased commnentator) rubbished FG's crime policies today. Maybe FG's policy is to bring back their Heavy Gang to tackle crime.

    So what?
Do you really not understand the statistical corelation between a rise in population and a rise in relative year-on-year crime figures?
The only way to change the world is to win elections.

So the rise in population is to blame for the rise in crime since 1997 ??
    Well thats a new one.

    Explain this then:

Crime rose by 18% between 1987 and 1994, yet the population grew by only 1-2%

Crime fell by 11% under the Rainbow Coalition, even though the population rose by less than 2%

How does this tally with your theory?

Are you seriously suggesting that the amount of crime committed is independent of the population?
