Civil servants given leave to cash cheques- even though paid automatically !

Further to last week's story - Council staff given 2 days leave to go to the races... - again this week we find out that civil/public servants are creaming it.

They get half an hour off every fortnight to cash their pay cheques ... even though they are paid directly to their bank accounts. Some might say this is small change - but it is indicative of moral malaise - public servants are not the ones to trust to lead us out of the mess we are in

    Civil servants given pay break
Officials get half an hour break 'to lodge cheques' despite being paid by electronic transfer
    Colin Gleeson

Civil servants are given a paid half-hour break every fortnight to allow them to cash their pay cheques in the bank, even though they are now paid by electronic transfer.

The perk costs Irish taxpayers about €8m a year.
    ...
Since 2003, new entrants to the public service are no longer entitled to the bank time perk, but it is still enjoyed by 80% of staff who were in employment before electronic payments were introduced.

    Horan defended the system...
(again I put this in Justice as to my mind it seems like theft)

I know some do in some Depts (25 minutes a fortnight, works out 2 minutes 30 seconds a day), but I don't. I do know private sector employees who are allowed more than that to go out and have a fag, are you against that also?

They also get days off to attend non-existent festivals.

You don't see any difference between smoking a fag that actually exists in all its cancer-inducing smelliness, and taking time off to cash a non-existent cheque?

The dishonesty and bare-faced cheek required to grab your coat and announce you're off to the bank with an imaginary cheque. Its indicative of complete moral bankruptcy in the PS unions.

It all just goes to show what a scam benchmarking was. There was supposed to be a modernization agenda associated with the 2 billion Bertie showered on the PS unions to buy their support. All of this sort of messing should have been swept away at that point.

I know your obsession with all things to do with the PS makes it difficult for you to disentangle facts from fiction, but what has this glitch to do with the PS unions

    Does this work both ways?

I regularly lose hours every month through the flexi-system.

I was capped 5 hours last month, 3 the month before. This is only going to get worse as the work load expands to make up the loss in staff at both ends.

Can I have those hours back please?

From my understanding that is not the way it works. The time is automatically accredited to their clocks, they don't have to grab their coats and announce anything.

Remarkable the way you try and portray it though, but from you I should have expected nothing less.

This issue should just be fixed, i.e. do away with the 'perk'. No compensation should be sought or given.

However, the treatment of the issue here is a little melodramatic; pictures being painted of staff waving imaginary cheques etc. A little overdone.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned cigarette-breaks. These have always driven me mad. To hell with all of you smokers and your filthy lazy bloody habit. Just do your bloody jobs and confine your self-destruction to your statutory breaks.

    So the dishonesty is institutionalized.

    And that makes it OK?

Oh, get a grip man. It's not as if the staff invented this thing. It's a failure of management that it hasn't been tackled.

No, it's not OK but I think that we can hold off on the pitchforks and burning torches for a little while longer.
