'My lord' address put out to pasture

The Irish Times reports that the old-fashioned form of address for most judges in the superior courts is to change from "my lord" to simply "judge" from Tuesday next, Minister for Justice Michael McDowell confirmed yesterday.

Is this just updating the courts, or is it the start of a wave of post-1916 commemoration colonial eradication?

Strangely, it was never a requirement under any law or rule of court that judges be addressed in that way.

It's only a customary practice that is being ruled out. Quite rightly, though; we shouldn't call judges Lords anymore than we'd call them Squires or mates.

Change for change's sake. Madness. Don't know what that McDowell fella is up to at all, trying to provide us a modern judiciary n' all...

    Glad to see its gone.

Do they still have to wear gowns and a silly wig?

So, will I burn the Four Courts or will I wait and see if he can do the business?

Hiker, I'm beginning to worry about your love of fire and the courts. Especially the way you always want to see the two of them together.
