Expenditure on Garda Síochána to be reduced by €85m

JUSTICE: EXPENDITURE ON An Garda Síochána this year is set to fall by €85 million, €70 million more than the Government estimated when the initial budget estimates were published last October.

The government is making some massive cuts but I do not feel that it is the interest of the country to cut the Gardai in this way.

Its cutting overtime from in excess of 2 million a week to only 1.5 million a week.

Training new Garda as there is a recruitment freeze.

Has little impact on Garda on the street.

Cuts will have an impact. Overtime is a required tool in policing. Recruitment freeze will also have an even bigger impact

The initial forecast was a €15 million cut. I assume this had the overtime and recruitment freeze in there. Where is the additional €70 million in cuts coming from?

Did you even bother to read the article before you posted as it details the 85 million.

Did you read the bit I highlighted in the OP? In the October budget there was a €15 million cut forecast for the Gardai. Now it is €85 million. Do you think this will not effect the frontline Gardai services?

So a recruitment freeze won't affect frontline services even with retirements

Indeed. We should still be questioning why we need to lash out 1.5m a week on overtime.

If it means an end to the practice of shooting fish in a barrell in the run up to Xmas, then I'm all for a reduction in Garda overtime/xmas bonus.
