    ...
Mr Mac Giolla Chomhaill contacted his solicitor who then sought copies of the documentation in Irish.
    ...

It is possibly the logical conclusion of an absurd premise ... wonder is it time to change the status of Irish ?

Or how serious a charge would it take for the state to adequately discharge its duties re Irish ? Speeding ? Nah .... Assault ? Hmmmm

The title of the thread is misleading.

I'd refuse to pay a speeding fine if the ticket was in English only - not that there's much chance of that happening here nowdays.

Nope it's not ... if Irish speakers can skip speeding tickets because of such issues why not murder raps ? "But I wasn't afforded a FLAC solicitor that spoke Irish" ... etc

Where is the line ? Why do we need an "official" language that so few speak ?

The logical conclusions of supporting Irish as official language are manifold: e.g. rostrum of Irish seaking judges (with sub specialisations), solicitors, court clerks , all documents translated ....

No wonder in this case the cops/DPP gave up & tore up the ticket ... but where is the line ?

of for ************************s sake. You can get the legislation on the internet, and I'd be willing to bet the solicitor had a copy of the District Court rules (in English) in his office - clearly the solicitor could have translated them both (if the accused genuinely couldn't speak English). Some ************************er gets off on this consitutional technicality while Chinese people or Latvians get prosecuted even if they can't read the legislation in Irish or English

Well, presumably it's not just for Irish speakers, but for anyone who is unable to acquire the relevant documentation on Irish (even if there's a requirement for the request to be made in Irish, it wouldn't be too difficult to muster that up).
Heavy words are so lightly thrown.

The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show.
It is then we'll see the rising of the moon.

you mean you haven't been up to now ?

All you need is your name and address, and a wide eyed look in the pub when they ask you to give it in English.

You'll never get done for after hours again

    Badi:

"gets off on this consitutional technicality while Chinese people or Latvians get prosecuted even if they can't read the legislation in Irish or English"

Please, think before you post. There's no such thing as a "constitutional technicality". If something is in the constitution, it's not a technicality.

In case you haven't read your constitution recently, Irish is the first language of the state. What kind of a banana republic is unable to give a ticket written in the first official language, within 28 days of the offense?
Only a fool would blame the language rather than the sloppy legal bureaucracy.

Your point is quite inane. If I go to Latvia and break the law can I squeal that I don't know Latvian?

By the way, Latvian and Chinese are languages spoken by immigrant workers to this country. They are not languages that have been spoken on this island for almost 2000 years. Your attitude to that language, Irish, now in its death-throes after almost two millenia, is craven and servile, but just what I expect of the Mass Immigration crowd.
