Civil Liberties Criticise Government's impending Legislation on Dealing with Gangs

Not for the first time, the IRish Council for Civil Liberties have put their foot in it regarding government legislation.

Whilst watching the Six-one news, I was aghast to hear a representative from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties criticise the government's proposed legislation for dealing with criminal gangs.

Do these people (the ICCL) live in the real world. Do they condone the activities of these people, intimidating witnessess, etc.

I am strongly in favour of what is being proposed. I would have gone even further, but I think this is one area where we need to give the Government our 100% backing.

Aye sure lets impose internment for anyone who disagrees with the Government or believes that people have rights.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties likes to pop its head up at times like this. They pretend their motives are purer than pure. However, it's membership is mainly made up of lawyers. They have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo i.e. the present cumbersome legal system pertaining to organised crime which the criminals are making a mockery of.

I suspect it is also lobbying by such groups as the ICCL that has led to our ludicrous sentencing policies for serious crimes.

As I say, they like to pop up at times like this, but otherwise don't do a whole lot. For instance, take a look at their website: could do with a bit of updating, don't you think? I don't take these people very seriously. Nor should the government. Nor should the judiciary.

one wonders what way michael collins would have dealt with the problem of organised crime in our society were he in power today? i suspect his methods would also cause concern to the iccl.

I heard a Civil Liberties spokesperson on Matt Cooper tonight and he said he was in favour of this legislation! His reservation was in relation to the Special Criminal Courts.

As far as I remember he said that surveillance is going on at the moment anyway and that the proposed legislation puts covert survellance on a legal footing so it can be used in criminal trials.

    Did my ears deceive me?

seeing that the government has recently in effect cut the wages of gardai, teachers, nurses, prison warders and soldiers maybe the criminal fraternity could also be hit by the cutting of the legal aid budget.

    Prime example of turkey-voting-for-Christmas-think.

As someone already pointed out above: sure we might as well bring back internment camps while we're at it. All you should need is the signature of a "senior garda" to be indefinitely committed.

    Rant over.

The ICCL wouldn't be the first group to criticise Obama.
