CAB should be used in banking crisis - AGSI

RTÉ News: CAB should be used in banking crisis - AGSI

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has said the asset stripping powers of the Criminal Assets Bureau should be used to recoup money hidden away during the banking crisis.
The President of the AGSI told its annual conference that bank executives and directors paying themselves huge unrealistic salaries and lending too much money were responsible for bankrupting banks and the collapse in confidence in the financial institutions.
Paschal Feeney blamed the financial regulators, the Central Bank, and the Government for letting it happen and said if the legislation was not there to investigate white-collar fraud then new laws should be enacted.

I'm not sure if its mere populism rather than just inappropriate, given that they seem to be exceeding their remit by making such pronouncements (although, on principle, they are probably right.)

CAB should have been in years ago.

Arthur Morgan, SF'd Finance spokesperson called for this in An Phoblacht a few weeks ago. Wonder was that where the AGSI got the idea from ?

AGSI have no place in the political process and the idea that they can just sieze money without proof of a crime shows how far they have overstepped the mark.

Garda Siochana have had people in leadership roles before trying to get involved in political process and rather not have it again.

Who the fock do AGSI think they are? Their political pandering to the populace is pathetic.

There's enough crap going on inside the force as it is: they should focus on getting their own house in order. Instead of that, they're meddling in things that have nothing to do with them.

A very unusual statement from AGSI. Thought that the conference was concerned with its members welfare rather than the policing of the banks

Although I would agree that the CAB should of course be investigating (potentialy) illegal financial dealings, I find it very alarming that such a statement comes from the AGSI.

No matter how much one might agree with the sentiment in this particular case, the fact of Gardai pronouncing on which laws should be enforced or which sectors should be investigated smacks of "picking and choosing", and sets a disturbing precedent.

If a cop sees me robbing a car or selling drugs, I bet he would come over soon enough to ask me a few questions, seems they need permission from the powers that be to investigate white colar criminals (FF) ?
