This is a stinker: Minister for Finance in charge of Garda promotion!!!

This is bizarre. Why would the Minister for Finance be allocated personal responsibility for promotion and appointment of Gardai. If there is to be a recruitment freeze on financial grounds, that's one thing, but to put him, effectively, in charge of the Gardai is the queerist, wrongest, worryingest thing to come out of this 'crisis' to date:

RTÉ News: Garda and army recruitment halted

Allowing myself to speculate about this, I'm wondering what ulterior motive might be behind this. (With Fianna Fail there is always an ulterior motive.) Are not the Gardai responsible for investigating the shenanigans at Anglo Irish and so forth?

    Any thoughts/ideas?

The security of the state is now at risk. We have seen what a balls-up this clown made of the banking situation, he did not even read a critical report.

They must be planning to cut down the numbers of Ministers?

Have the opposition not questioned this? Costs are the remit for Finance, not promotions!

I have no confidence in this present administration, I don't think they have confidence in themselves! Yesterday Lenihan said our economy was weak, today the EU called it grave! there is a big differential in those two words, which is it?

    Cheers

Up to now all Garda promotions from Superintendent up were political appointments.

Did you see any Superintendent's or Chief Superintendents marching?
    You certainly did not.

Now all appointments from Garda up are political appointments so it is one way to stop the marching...

To the Garda: "you march you will not be promoted"

To the Sergeant: "you tell us who is marching and giving out about us or you wont be promoted"

And when the public find out what really happened to the finances and take to the streets the government will need control over the Gardai.

Time for us to wake up before we have a total police state.

It is a terrible slap in the face for Dermot Ahern, been pushed aside like that, maybe, he can go back to climbing trees in North Co Dublin again.

Looks to me like it's being done principally for financial reasons - the money ain't there basically for promotions or appointments which means paying for those promotions or appointments in a salary/wage sense whatever other way you look at it

Cast yer mind back to approx 1-2 weeks ago. 78 Road Schemes have been put on hold and taken off the NRA unless the Dept of Finance individually sanctions each Road Scheme - that was for financial reasons obviously

So i'd lay off the ulterior motive stuff tbh .... it's really all a case of no cash for anything
