So it is no surprise at all that Ireland has a higher profile there than in other parts. You also need to remember that on top of that Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa, with a population of around 150,000,000 people. Of this 150,000,000 Ireland got 1,000 Nigerian asylum applications last year.

While I do not approve of the abuse of the asylum process as it undermines the cause of those genuinely in need, at the same time Nigeria is a total sh1thole, and who can blame Nigerians for resorting to all sorts of scams to forge a better life for themselves and their children.

I cannot say that under the circumstances I wouldn't do the same thing, and I suspect that hand on heart neither could you.
Guinness is owned by Diageo, a UK registered company. If Guinness was indeed ever "Irish" , it was a long time ago. Ipso facto, it has as much relevance as Siemens.

Interesting to read through this thread. I perceive a distinct male/female difference of opinion on this subject.

It would be interesting to know if this was indicative of public opinion at large.

The mayor of Sligo, Veronica Cawley, yesterday stood by her decision to hold a civic reception for Ms Izevbekhai last year while a spokesman for the Sligo-based Let Them Stay organisation said yesterday's reports raised more questions than they answered.

Cllr Cawley said some people had suggested that she should apologise for holding the civic reception but she insisted: "I have nothing to apologise for."

At that function in Sligo Town Hall, Pamela wept as she said that Elizabeth would always be with the family and was a guardian angel for her sisters Naomi and Jemima.

Cllr Cawley urged people not to jump to conclusions until all the facts come out.

"I have always said that the purpose of the civic reception was to highlight the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation and today I repeat my call for a worldwide ban on this torture," said Cllr Cawley.

"Before Pamela came to live in the north west, most us had never heard of FGM but there is a huge awareness now.''

"These reports are only a snap shot in a long-running investigation which is not over yet," said Cllr Cawley.

Cllr Cawley said that while a number of people had gone on local radio yesterday saying she should apologise for holding a civic reception for Ms Izevbekhai "everyone who phoned me today was supportive".

We should do the same here.

Pammy should try the USA and see what happens to her.
In the very unlikely event that an airline permitted her to board a US-bound plane, she would have been hauled into Secondary Interrogation upon arrival
at Newark or Kennedy. The next step after that is jail, prior to her removal from the jurisdiction.

Simple, but the Fianna Fails fool who misrule our country aren't even capable of protecting our borders.

Cawley: ""everyone who phoned me today was supportive".

Cawley is an incorrigible liar. I phoned her, and, guess what, I wasn't "supportive" of her mad behaviour!

Vote Cawley out in June. Her response shows how deeply-rooted the Irish official Left's bleeding-heart liberal tendency is. The civic reception was a waste of taxpayer's money in hard times, and is a warning-sign of how a govt involving Labour could handle both asylum and the public finances. It is imperative that any future Rainbow govt not let Labour touch asylum policy with a barge-pole. They have an obsession with open-borders and mass-amnesty. And Kevin Doyle, FGM is not widespread in the western Maghreb countries like Morocco and Algeria so she could have gone there instead of crossing the Meditteranean to another continent. As far the conspiracy theories on the Nigerian govt, why would they be so concerned about the country one of their citizens inhabits that they would threaten this doctor to change his story? Get real, bleeding-hearts.

In addition the only ethnic group in Nigeria who do not practice FGM at all are the Fulani who strangely enough are all Muslim so lets put this christian/muslim divide to bed as well.
I see the person who spends a lot of time whining about his pension levy is a fully paid up member of the "let them all in" brigade. Perhaps if we had an immigration policy which stopped chancers and scammers staying here, we might save on the enormous costs to us in the form of benefits. Where do you think the government is going to get all the money to support all these outsiders and the public service wage bill?

Well said FT. You can email this naive fool to let her know what you think of here here: cawleyveronica@eircom.net
And the prospect of having Labour in charge of asylum is indeed chilling.

You really are a despicable excuse for a human being. You know little of this case and base all your statements on assumptions and on the views expressed by racists and the like. Before any civilised community would force this family out they would make absoultely sure that no harm will befall them That certainty is not present here and accordingly they must be allowed to remain whether lies were told or not. It is not unusual for desperate people to resort to saying whatever it is they think might assist them in their plight.

Just playing Devil's Advocate, (and ignoring your ad hominem attack on FT), what do you know of the case? Indeed all that most of Ireland knows of this case is that all the court actions to date have failed. The courts have not found in her favour and have not believed her story about being smuggled through Holland etc. We see some very polished spinning in the press on her behalf. The latest information, the results of a Garda investigation and an affidavit points to the kernel of her story being false. So what exactly are we to believe?

So is she telling the truth or is this a scam that relies on people reacting emotionally rather than rationally? Perhaps you can provide some much needed explanation.
