I find that less amazing than the reaction of such people when their 'cause celebre' has been patently been shown to be a fraud. Their reaction is to cling to any implausible excuse, no matter how ridiculous, rather than face the bare facts and admit they were made unmerciful fools of. They obviously have never heard of the term 'when you are in a hole, stop digging'.
Well RTE have decided to keep digging, they are featuring this woman on Would You Believe. How the hell can they her on a religious show?

How I am being torn apart by the awful plight of my friend Pamela - Analysis, Opinion - Independent.ie
Many Nigerians claim that the practice has rapidly changed in urban areas. Some tribal cultures within Nigeria, like Pamela's own Natal people, have never had FGM and various cultures within Nigeria say it is no longer so widespread.

Just now on Sam Smyths' Sunday Supplement they were discussing this case. Mary O'Rourke said that she was approached by people about the case and and supported it but could not do so now. David Quinn was stated that no exception could be made in this case. But the most revealing was the comments of Mr Wishy Washy himself, Finian McGrath, who could not bring himself to say a word in support of her case and stated that due process will have to take place i.e. the inevitable deportation after the collapse of the case because of fraud. If Mr Wishy Washy himself cannot say a word in your favour then you really are screwed!
Thank you. This is a very long and repetitive thread and not worth trawling through so the link is appreciated. I found one sentence in that article that is relevant to your statement : "Some tribal cultures within Nigeria, like Pamela's own Natal people, have never had FGM and various cultures within Nigeria say it is no longer so widespread."
I think you are conveniently over looking the fact that it was not Pamela's people that insisted on Elizabeths FGM it was her husbands. It seems remarkable to me that in an very moving article which lends great credence to Pamelas fight to keep her girls safe you focus on one fact and make a false extrapolation from it. On second thoughts it's not remarkable at all. It's very, very predictable.
