If McDowell was still in office, he would probably describe this as a "cock and bull" story. He would be absolutely right.
This is all academic, she fled to protect her children from FGM. It doesn't matter where she could have chosen to go, she and her children are here. The FGM case is proven, all international agencies cocnur that the pracitse is wideapread with a mean of 25%, that is 1 in 4 female children are mutilated. There can be no justification for exposing these children to such harm, none whatever.

So there are Irish illegals in the US who claim to be fleeing female circumcision?

    First I heard of it.

    Hopi,

I don't think anybody, bar perhaps Horace, is alleging that Nigeria is a nice place. It is highly corrupt and has a high incidence of FGM.

However, do you think, and the logic of your statement is, that anyone arriving here from Nigeria with children should never be returned there even without any proof of individual risk?

Is that your position. Yes or no?

Would not a woman fleeing to protect her children have applied for asylum in Holland, or even flown directly to the U.K. for which she had a visa, and applied there?

Is it not obvious to you by now that this woman is a liar?

What is the purpose of your repeated attempts to have this issue raised? Are you saying that because you believe that to allow these girls to stay here would result in a huge increase in applications for asylum that we should send these children back to Nigeria where they face a 25% chance of being mutilated? We are above that surely, no?
Any difficulties arising from a decision to allow this family stay need to be addressed.

    Now Horace,

That kind of talk is not getting us anywhere. The unanswerable fact is that Nigeria is very high on the list of corrupt nations. The last election was held by all independent observers to be corrupt and undemocratic. FGM is practiced to a high incidence there. Just look at the US State Department report or the UN reports.

However, none of that is authority for the proposition that anyone landing here from Nigeria with kids should not be sent back without proof of actual personal risk.

What difference does it make what 'this woman' is? It is the children who are exposed to harm if deported.

She did not land here from Nigeria. By her own account (for what it's worth) she landed here from Holland, although it is more likely she came from the U.K.
