Olunkunle Eluhanla to Return to Ireland

I think RTÉ just announced that Mullah McDowell is reversing his fatwah and allowing Olunkunle Eluhanla to come back to Ireland.

In fact, if I heard it correctly, he's going to be paying for flights, compensation, etc, etc.

I'm shocked at McDowell changing his mind like that - not like him at all.

(I don't think the poor guy should ever have been deported in the first place, btw)

I do think he should be allowed to return to sit his Leaving Cert, but hopefully he'll be deported immediately afterwards. If he isn't, it sends a terrible signal to all would be illegal immigrants: stay in Ireland illegally long enough, waste as much taxpayer's money as possible challenging deportation orders and appealing to higher courts, and you'll eventually be allowed stay. If illegal immigrants are allowed stay in circumstances like that, then they should be forced to pay back the taxpayer's money that was spent on their legal teams, maybe by a special 5% depuction on their salaries.

    From rte.ie:

This morning, Mr McDowell said the decision had been wrong and he was sorry for it.

He said he had reflected on it overnight and had decided that the Irish Government will issue the Nigerian with a six-month student visa to allow him finish his studies.

He said this was a one-off decision and would not set a precedent.
    Kudos to him.
Nothing will motivate the lazy / apathetic / Americanised / west-British types to embrace their culture and the Irish language.

Is he paying for the flights out of his own pocket or is the tax payer forking out for this?
I hope its the former and I hope the lad is flying Business Class and orders Champange for everybody.

I think community integration has to be taken seriously by immigration bodies.

This guy obviously had a real life here, and wasn't causing trouble. His deportation touched a lot of lives in a very real way. Also the money spent on him would be wasted if he's educated and simply deported. If he stays here, he can become a productive member of society, and pay taxes.

I'm glad these students are learning they can make a difference... that's the greatest thing to come out of this.

I think illiegals should be deported and from what I can see, this guy hasn't the best reasons (it seems to the authorities ) to stay here and that is why he was deported. However, his case should have been assessed within 2 months of his coming here, so a decision could have been made and his future would be hanging over his head like a sword. Give it 5 years for the gov. to make up their mind and its no wonder the guy has got his whole life set up. Deporting him then is just tragic and if anyone has been in Ireland that long, then they should be entitled to live in Ireland forever.

    Well done to all involved.

Great to see McDowell cower under the pressure from students.

Part of my problem with his deportation in the first place is that he was actually a useful & contributing member of society here (thanks in principle to his work ethic and the fact that it's taken so long to process his application).

He's been working, paying taxes, and trying to better himself in order that he can work more and pay more taxes. Where is the burden on society?

Nigeria in its current state needs people with those qualities more than we do
