    One in four cigarettes illegal

We know that prohibition leads to crime so taxing cigarettes to death without banning them appeared to be a good alternative.

But we are reaching a limit and the black market is huge now.

    Do we need a re-think?

Try telling that to the pious plankton at ASH. They want to make working class people pay an extra €15 a week for their little bit of stress relief in the middle of a recession.

I swear, if thereis indeed a heaven Prof Clancy will surely be beaten to a pulp at the gates by St Peter.

phase them out. start from 16 and increase the minimum age it anually. have it by perscription only if necessary until eventually in 40-50 years time it will be completely gone from Ireland. Not an easy solution but one that may work. Best I can think of without having people run to spain with 4 empty suitcases at the weekend on cheap flights to get their fix or flooding the black market anymore. Let's face it, we can't save THIS generation from smoking but we can start to save the next one now!

What gives you the god given right to "Save" anyone?

What if someone doesn't want to be saved?

    Twenty sublime sticks a day.

Listen, whether you like it or not, some people do actually enjoy their tobacco. We are not all self loathing people who blame the big bad tobacco companies for keeping us unslaved. And you can ban them all you want but people will still smoke.

Prohibition has never worked anywhere. People like drugs, cigarettes & alcohol. Always will.

As long as we are not bothering you, why would you care?

So that makes it about 40.
don’t give me any of that b^llsh1t talk. We know the risks and smokers effectively pay off huge companies and governments by buying the damn things in the first place to let us commit slow suicide. Our minds have been preset by a combination of social nuture and nicotine.
It might surprise you to find out that I also smoke but I don’t like it for the reasons set out above.

and before you ask I did quit. For over two and a half years. Unfortunately the cravings came back and due to medical issues at the time, not smoking related, I was unable to take the nicotine patches or inhalers. Cold turkey didn't last too long after that!
