Prison Officer caught with drugs and 40 mobile phones

Prison officer held after mobile phone, drugs seizure - The Irish Times - Tue, Mar 17, 2009

This should have a big impact on the ability of the Limerick drug gangs to do their business. Good work by the Gardai.

Maybe he was being blackmailed, or threats against the family etc?

It is always better not to prejudge when we do not know the facts. He was plainly very brazen, or very foolish or very confident of not being rumbled to go around with 40 mobile phones.

Given his age and his service I think there is more to this than what meets the eye.

agreed. I heard that his family's welfare was threatened but that's pure rumour. Tiger stuff almost. Regardless, we shoud leave this to the proper authorities and NOT continue this thread until we know more. If he did NOT have a defense, he might well have one now......

I think you are right. It is wrong to prejudge and it is wrong to assume that just because the Gardai arrested him that he is totally guilty.

There could be other reasons for the arrest

What a load of crap as the technology already exists to completely block Mobile phone signals in a prison, it is widely used around the world.

Why has it not been implemented as there is no reason for anybody to have a mobile phone in a prison and that includes the staff.

Prison life in this county is too soft and sentences are too short. I believe that if the prison regimes were much tougher for repeat offenders, then our subsequent recidivism rates would go down.
