Two middle-aged men get lenient 2 yr sentence for statutory rape of 14 year old child

An actor and an ex-courier who had sex with a 14-year-old boy after they first met him through a gay website have been jailed for two years by Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

'Fair City' actor Patrick Dunleavy (aged 42) with an address at Sherrard Street Lower, Dublin 1, pleaded guilty to engaging in a sexual act with the boy in January 2007, while Thomas Rogers (aged 45), of St Catherine’s Avenue, Rush, pleaded guilty to two charges of engaging in a sexual act with him in January and February 2007.

The boy had created a profile on Gaydar stating he was 19 years old but both men later acknowledged in garda interviews that the teenager admitted on meeting them that he was only 15 years old, he was in fact a couple of weeks away from his 15th birthday. Each accused agreed that they were aware that the age of consent was 17.

Two middle aged men engaged in sexual activity with a 14 year old child despite knowing that he was below the age of consent. Yet they only get two years.

How many months will they serve. This is a pathetic sentence.

As a gay man I certainly think that this was also a lenient sentence. Given that they both said they knew the child was a child and not a 19 year old as previously claimed by him. I agree totally a pathetic sentence. Should have been at least seven in my opinion.

Why is your opinion labelled with the tag "as a gay man"?

You (homosexuals in general) constantly claim that you are not different - so why is your opinion not just the opinion of a normal citizen?

Are these men gay or are they paedophiles or are they both?

To be fair to Tiernanator, I and other posters have questioned whether there is ambivalence in the gay community about under-age sex.

I have accused the gay community of closing ranks around their own when they are accused of wrong-doing (eg. O'Searcaigh).

Tiernanator's unambiguous comments are therefore very welcome and also carry additional weight (imho) due to his sexual orientation.

Both but their sexuality is irrelevant, they may also both prefer Coke to Pepsi.

Very lenient sentences but this reflected their guilty pleas, genuine remorse & cooperation with the trial. Still they were the adults in the situation and should've known better.

I'd have given them 5 yrs each.

Well it seems they did not set out to look for a child so they were gay men who became paedophiles because they stumbled across this kid. I suspect the risk of reoffending is pretty much nil. I read that the kid met another man who said "No way, you're jail bait" when he saw him.

damned it we do and damned if we don't. I think it is important because these rapists met the young boy through a gay internet site. Gaydar. ie. That is why I qualified my comments.

Both. They knew he was underage but carried on regardless. BTW what character did Dunleavy play in Fair City?

Great, so a hetrosexual male in his 30s/40s who meets a 14 year old girl through some website can expect a 2 year sentence too ?

    Doubt it somehow.

    So much for 'equality'.
