    McDowall 'evidence' on IRA/Farc

"He said it was not possible to think of "an explanation which is more credible" than the "intelligence-based explanation" he had given"

    - according to a report in the IT today, McD referring to Connelly/Farc/IRA.... etc., in a Newstalk 106 interview.

He said that the IRA were to be paid $20m for training the Farc (money got from drug dealing, acccording to McD)

When confronted with the question of the credibility of his 'evidence' he said the above.

    Would another explanation be -

    1. There is lots of mileage to be got out of this in Dublin 4
    2. I don't have to produce any evidence
    3. I can get rid of a pest (Connelly)
    4. I can improve my anti-IRA credentials amongst the chattering classes

Therefore I will fly this kite, using Dail privilege and then follow it up with quotes from 'intelligence' in my possession. [Question - is the use of the word intelligence in the context of McD and Dept of Justice an oxymoron?].
The result? miles and miles of coverage in the meja.....which I will feed from time to time with new 'intelligence'

Is that not as valid an explanation?

    Bye, Barry

Possibly, but it's also possible that it's true, and that the information came from informers within the republican movement.

Anything is possible in this crazy world, but even a republican informer would baulk at helping McD - wouldn't they? Please re-assure me....there have to be other pols they'd rather tell...

I'm assuming that any informers within the republican movement aren't met by McDowell personally, in an underground car park, wearing a trenchcoat and carrying a tartan thermos flask.

But sure Mc Dowell is a republican. Surely he couldn't inform on himself?!

If Connolly did indeed travel to Colombia on a false passport or on false papers to work the IRA and FARC shouldn't he be arrested and/or questioned about it by the Garda? Or have they done so already?

The Irish Minister for Justice has a new method of saving tax-payers money in that he dispenses with the need for a court case and he just slanders the person instead. If this happened in any other country their would be calls for the minister resignation, but in Ireland trial by media seems to be acceptable.

Yep, and, according to the IT piece, McD said Connolly couldn't be charged with travelling in Colombia on a false passport - or some such guff. Handy that, saves one having to produce 'evidence' - that word again....
