The Cost of Data Retention Laws in Ireland: Bill to be published 'soon'.

The Data Retention Bill is causing a bit of smoke but no fire thus I am including in here two links:

Bill to give guidelines on data has bizarre features - The Irish Times - Fri, Feb 13, 2009

Karlin Lillington who has been usefully confined to the Business section and has since 2001 broken stories on our abject failures in legislations discusses
the History of The Data Retention Bill in an Irish and EU context.

Why did we have data retention before the EU issued a directive requiring it? : makes some interesting historical reading.

Today Mary Minihan reports on the TIF and the DOJ regarding an ongoing row for financial compensation if proposals on data retention become law.

I cannot find that link at the moment but have the report on my opera Mini which states that the article appears in the Print version of the I.T.

more info : Digital Rights Ireland

The Data Retention Bill is sometimes known as TDR is almost on the Books, thus we shall have the legislation in print form within the next few days.,which is why Karlin Lillington's article at top of post is quite interesting reading , giving a full account of the issue from both Irish and EU perspectives. The TIF cannot afford to implement and wants compo; and we were illegally retaining private data without legislation from 2001,thats cos we don't trust anyone.

Irish people have shown themselves to be hopelessly behind the curve when it comes to understanding issues that are any way complex/involving regulation

This country should pioneer citizen-centric digital rights - if we created attractive user focused laws and a clever regulatory framework we could steal a march on Silicon Valley

Companies would headquarter here for reasons belong our low tax rates

We've plenty of top flight unemployed people at the moment (Lawyers, economists , IT etc) - a small committee could be formed and sensible framework created

This issue needs to be wrested back form the unimaginative authoritarians in Justice. There's money to be made & human rights to be preseved

Karlin Lillington has been excellent on this but she has been largely relegated to the back pages on the issue of illegal post 9/11 data retention laws brought in as an
emergency measure and not legislated until threat of legal action.

I recommend her cache and blog on these issues. we have had the longest unlegislated retention of TDR in the EU.

I think John Collins is now editing/assistant editing the business section. He might be covering the IT section.

Really? It is the same formula for years - Karlin's lifestyle column, Mike Butcher's product pimpage, Danny O'Brien's token techie piece and Collins' rather more solid business (these days) reporting. It has come a long way from the utter cargo-cult cluelessness of the Dot.bomb era.

Indeed it has been the same formula - Lillington & O'Brien know their stuff. BY excellent I mean by general journalistic standards ....

I still remember Computimes with Michael Cunningham & Fiachra O'Marcaigh ... though I don't recall it as being very good ?

Danny O'Brien would have a lot more respect in the industry as he used to run Need To Know. I don't think that Karlin ever had a good understanding of the technology. She is better at human interest/lifestyle/interview journalism where no deep knowledge of technology is required. Collins has improved a lot over the years.

The good old times - before most of the "technology" journalists discovered the internet? It wasn't great but they had the interest and passion. That passion for knowledge is missing now.
