The Dail rubber stamped the appointment today so the foul deed is all but completed.
Due to the selection process we cannot now have any faith in the Garda Ombudsman Commission.

Perhaps Gallagher is a dark horse. He might bite back at the government although the manner of his appointment does seriously undermine any perception of independence on his part.

    We will wait and see.

His handling of The John O'Donoghue speeding case and the Boylan case will tell a lot plus his actions on whether he opens any more cases in the Public Interest.

I will not be holding my breath but I am prepared to see what he does.

I hear that he has volunteered to take a sizeable pay cut. Can that be taken as pandering to the government or does it say something else.?

He is only one of three Commissioners and has no more power, as Chairman, than the others. Carmel Foley and Conor Brady are the others.

Gallagher has a fearsome reputation in the Civil Service for being a strong man and not one to be trifled with. I think that, though the process was not desirable, he will actually make a good Chairman.

The Ombusmsman's investigation is confidential. The sensitivity of the subject could not be greater.

So who is giving details of the investigation to the Sunday Times?

The usual source of all leaks to the newspapers about Garda operations!! Take one guess. I bet you will get it right.

It appears that the bold Mr Gallagher is an absolute stickler for dotting the i's and crossing the t's as a former close associate has divulged. That being so, he must have suffered apoplexy on many a day listening to the public utterings of the last Taoiseach.

A very shrewd observer has said that Mr G is urbane, a superb shadow boxer, not particularly liked by those around him as he wrong foots them too often, and is probably best suited to the Machiavellian world of Foreign Affairs diplomacy.

These being the tools in his armoury, how do they equip him to take on an octopus like the Garda Force in his new role ?

He will do what the urban myth/perhaps truth from Foreign Affairs had him doing years ago when he allegedly kicked in the door of a subordinates office who had not being towing the line appropriately. I imagine lots more door kicking on the way.
