Garda Uniform Policy - Discriminatory and Exclusionist

Despite a much-vaunted drive to recruit minority groups into An Garda Siochana in 2006, as few as twenty-five immigrants had actually made it into the ranks as of Sept. 2008. Not only is this figure woefully under representative of the immigrant community, but it is also a damning indictment against an organisation that claims impartiality in its recruitment process.

Bull. The Gardai have the same admission policy for everyone. They even wave the language requirements for non-nationals. The fact that they don't pass the tests is not the Garda authorities fault. I am all for having more minorities in the Gardai. By merit though.

The garda uniform, as it stands, is a suitable compromise between neutrality and tradition. It is not overtly religious or partisan, in any sense. That is what you want to make it. This is not Saudi Arabia or Britain.
Is it OK for a Garda attired in a Christian uniform to arrest a Muslim? The uniform is not neutral in any sense of the word.

No, as such a man/lady would obviously be an impersonator since the Gardai don't wear a Christian uniform

Exactly. The uniform is totally non-denominational. Christian uniform my eye.

The uniform as it stands is a reflection of society as it was, Catholic/Protestant and Christian. It was acceptable then, it is not acceptable now.

We have had all this before with the Sikh gentleman. Unless there is something new, I propose this thread be closed.
