    All homeless are now criminals

Law on begging to include €700 fine or one month in jail - The Irish Times - Tue, Nov 25, 2008

Fachtna attacking a symptom once again, well done.

Ireland is becoming a joke. It's like they think they can make problems disappear by making them illegal and squeezing people into a jail. It's disgusting.

So you think it is ok to have gangs of Roma beggars on every street and major road junction then? Begging is illegal in many EU countries - which is how it should be.

Many of the Irish 'beggars ' I have seen have been wearing the latest fashion runners.

All homeless are criminals - thats not what this proposed law says. This law is to deal with the likes of Roma gypsies who use their kids to aggressively beg at ATM's, Luas stops etc. I worked with homeless psychiatric people in the past, it is a total nonsense to suggest that this law is against all homeless people.

A law is needed to deal with these troublemakers.

I would support this law. I think the aggressive and intimidating behaviour by some of the people who are begging is wrong. I would often give money or food to homeless people, but I get very annoyed when I see a person begging with a child in their arms, or when I get put in a threatening situation by someone who is begging.

Good! Won't have people on the street any more. I'm in full agreement.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

As someone who lives in the city centre and has been harassed daily by Roma begging while trying to have a coffee and also harassed nightly by Roma begging while trying to have a pint; never mind even the whinging blocking the approach to ATMs; I think it really did take them long enough to do something about the Roma begging. I will be interested in the effects of this new law.

The begging at the Luas stops is already illegal. It doens't stop them

And does anyone else see the illogic of threatening a months jail on beggars? "If you don't stop begging we'll punish you with one months free accomodation and free food"
"Who will bailout the IMF after FF is finished with them?"

Complain to the Gardai then. Take it as high as possible as they are clearly not doing their job (again!).
