Law to protect the Title of Accountant /Eire Duped by Ahern

We have seen efforts by the Government to protect the public, from unscrupulous individuals posing as Architects, Building Surveyors, and Quantity Surveyors through the use of the Building control Act 2007, which prohibits those unqualified, from using the Title/Style ,Description or holding them selves out to act as such, or to infer them selves, as being such.

Many people fell victims to rogues who were taken in by such rogues, and caused damage, loss, and put many in financial peril.

The roguery perpetrated under the guise of persons, passing them selves off, as such pales into insignificance, compared to the havoc, that has been wrecked on this Nation, by a particular rogue who held himself out to be an Accountant, but who had never qualified as such, despite unsubstantiated claims made by others , with a view to implying him to be a qualified man.

His tally to date is a property marked over heated to being one of the most expensive in Europe, which is now in free fall, a tax base that was unsustainable, a formerly competitive economy, that was the envy of the world, now with its competitiveness shot to pieces. I could go on.

Strangely there were indicators such as his distrust in banks during his career, in which his views differed form Real Accountants, as he would not deposit his savings in banks, even though he was the Minister for Finance at the Time.
We must guard to ensure that our people will not be the victims of Pseudo Accountants who might gain the trust the confidence, of the people,
by passing themselves off as an Accountant, hence implying that they are, experts in the fields of Economic matters, Financial control, Financial & General management , and win power to run our economy into the ground.

Legislation to restrict the practice of Accountancy, and the use of the title or style of Accountant, to only those, Qualified by Examination of a bona fide Professional Institution to be nominated by the Minister, is long overdue.

Re: New Legislation needed to protect the Title of "Accountant"

i believe plans are in place to limit the title to holders of professional qualifications (aca, acca, cima, cpa etc).

makes sense as i can't pose as a garda, doctor or other professions.

Too late we have already been taken in as a Nation by a man describing himself as an Accountant.

It would be a great public service for the educational institutions to issue a statement outlining the mans, enrolment details, attendance record, course of study, examinations taken, and educational awards.

As a qualified accountant of one of the major bodies - this is a ridiculous idea.

What is accounting ? Its when something is accounted. People can account for things all the time. There already is legislation in place to stop people advertising themselves as 'Chartered Accountant' or auditor and so on and so forth, thats enough. Or should we similarly legislate for description of 'driver' etc etc or maybe those professions which marteenpak deeems worthy ?

An accountant is just someone who prepares accounts. Anybody can and has the right to do that. Phrases like Chartered Accountant or Certified Accountant are already protected by law so there is no need for legislation. Auditors are also protected by law. This legislation is just a sop to make accountants believe they are a profession like Lawyers or Doctors whenm in reality they are just number crunchers with little imagination.
