New public services card a de facto 'ID' card: Times

The government is to introduce a photo social and public services card which will act as a proxy ID card. The 640k free bus pass users will be the first to be issued with them by the end of the year. The move is partly prompted by the introduction of border checks with Britain as well as the increasing problem of identity fraud. The card will act as a single social and public services card across the public service containing a range of information.

Unfortunately it's the modern world we live in that forces us into doing this. Unfortunate but ultimately necessary.

In what sense? Are we under some kind of threat we previously were not? Otherwise, what's in it for us, exactly?

Oh I can name a few benefits:
Reduced social welfare fraud; More efficient access to public services; Reduced administration costs; Increased national security; Reduction in asylum shoppers popping over from Britain etc etc.......

I could go on but I think ye get the picture.

Give us the other side of the coin now, please !
Will German, French or Dutch inscribe the epitaph of Emmet?

In theory this could cause large productivity gains - so time saved for customer (citizen) and worker(public servant)

I'd like to see details though

As for civil liberty concerns ? Highly theoretical also... as I've pointed out before banking officials can often

1) See your bank account transactions including salary
2) See your credit card transactions including flavour of porn*

Mobile Telecoms employees can:

1) See everywhere you were
2) See most/all of your friends and your contact patterns

Key thing is instead of the poor quality present members of the ICCL muttering on about vague generalities we need:
1) An open source design: no security by obscurity and lets have trust
2) A strong framework that governs usage (technical , process and legal designed and integrated upfront)

But as no public representative gets these issues nothing will happen.
