Cowen is Taoiseach because of Pee Flynn?

Stumbled across an interesting RTE Podcast that makes the case that Flynn's Late Late appearance, by ensuring Tom Gilmartin's presence at the Flood Tribunal, has had massive repercussions, including Dunlop's exposure, Lawlor's jailing, and most of all Ahern's resignation. The contributors are Michael Clifford of the Tribune and Michael Nugent of the blogosphere. It is amazing how one minute of hubris can cause such untold damage...

They consider the damage Ahern would have avoided had Flynn kept his mouth shut, and that Ahern looking back will rue the appearance by Flynn in Jan 99. It was the font of Ahern's problems. Perhaps it's not that interesting to others, but I was struck by the idea that nine or ten sentences on a chat show could lead to two years of governmental paralysis and the resignation of a Taoiseach. And if Ahern's Tribunal appearances have any impact on the Lisbon vote, Flynn's minute of implosion could have international impact. Though that's getting ahead of myself.

How ? he doesn't have any relatives in the Dáil. Pee Flynn's explosion on LLS was significant, as was Ben Dunne's hooker encounter in Florida.

Bertie had a phenomenal run as leader, and he left a party which was well disposed to Cowen as heir apparent. had Bertie not got the leadership after Albert then there would likely have been a C&W set leader, who would also have suited Cowen's ascent

He inherited his seat from his father. He is another of Dail Eireann's hereditary peers.

Michael Nugent's good, isn't he? The most entertaining journalistic performer we've had in Ireland in years. He's a talent. I hope he's making the living he wants to make.
He seemed to have a very good handle on this stuff, unlike many journalists who are actually paid to follow this stuff by their newspapers or TV and still don't understand it.
