A daily limit wouldn't help problems much though as a pub could just open at 10pm and then effectively be open all night. Worse still, 2 pubs beside each other could arrange it so that one of them is always open, effectively allowing 24 hour drinking.

Can't remember who but someone on Q&A said that Irish people can have a drink at "every social opportunity" but that's simply not true when you compare us to the Europeans (who we are trying to emulate).

If clubs were allowed open during the night, the practice of having post-club house parties would end swiftly. It exists out of necessity.

Lots of people (like I do in Germany) will start going out much later, and focussing their night on clubbing rather than, barring followed by nightclub-drinking when the bars close.

My nights out are frequently shorter here than in Ireland, even if they involve leaving a club at 5am, for that very reason.

Let people who want to dance and go clubbing do just that, and not force them into binge-drinking dens beforehand. It makes sense, lots of sense.

Is that not a bit optimistic though? We'd all love to see a proper clubbing scene emerge in Ireland but be realistic, if clubs are open all night there will be the same bingers who stay in them as long as possible getting as drunk as possible.

    Who's forcing them?
