Are you sure about that? Not saying you are lying, but it would seem very hard to believe that no Irish victim has ever had a President or Government representive at a service.

I do not see this as a snub to Irish victims of violence, I can see where you are coming from, but I just do not feel that this is what happened.

There have been, GlasgowIrish, but the manner in which these two unfortunate Poles met their end reflects appallingly on us as a people. This has no doubt received a lot of media attention in Poland, and rightly so, and in my opinion it is proper that our state representatives express a view and solidarity with the families of the two murdered to demonstrate where the feelings of all Irish people worthy of the name lie.

The death of Manuela Riedo in Galway was the work of one lone perpatrator. The deaths of the two Poles was horrific in the banality of its circumstances. If their deaths can serve any purpose, it will be that of forcing our government to reform the juvenile justice system to take account of such murders by feral children and extend liability to the creatures that spawned them. No murder is worth more or less than another. If our public representatives cannot be bothered to address the problem of feral children, at least they can express how the overwhelming majority of our people feel about the needless slaughter of two foreigners who came to our country for a better life.

It doesnt - for a number of reason, it was neccessary and welcome that such a high level of attention has been given this tragedy.

Firstly, I fully believe that if these men had been Irish, we would have had as much of a public outcry. The manner of their deaths and the callousness displyed was shocking, the fact that they were visitors and guests brought the matter to the international stage. I was opposed to the official representation at the funeral of a drug abusing nobody, but these two men seemed like good, honest, decent young men who deserved a better death than that at the hands of scum.

No one is suggesting that these lives are worth any more than Irish lives, but I thought it was correct to balance out a lot of the xenophobia in this country (and I myself do not believe that the attack was specifically motivated by race, although I am sure there were racial slurs used during the attack). Usually, I am opposed to band wagoning on these attacks, but I think it was neccessary to display to the international community, that for all the bad that has happened, Irish people still have a capacity to care and that for every little hardman out there, there are scores of decent people who have a live and let live philosophy.
