The Gardai sometimes seem afraid to enforce the law imho.

Yes, but there has been a glorification of certain sports stars by the Irish media and Fine Gael. We all know the pictures of the local "sports star" in the paper with his girlfriend usually at a bar or club. The sport is sponsored by an Irish drinks company.

There was also the recent "Love hate" series by RTE. It seemed to me to make heroes out of some Gangland figures. We also had all the films and books written by prominent journalists, with close links to the Gardai.

Hardly it ran for 20 series, it's spin off SVU is on series 19. I think the only syndicate show on US television to run for more series than the show it spun off from is NCIS which was a spin off of JAG.

No respect or fear of the guards. They are under staffed, under trained and under motivated. Scandal after scandal.

I know 2 guards and they were telling em about the fitness test to get in. Very ,very basic. No ongoing fitness testing then.

We are policed by an imaginary net. The criminals see this and are basically doing as they wish.

Young people accessing porn and the downplaying of mental health issues is going to hit us further down the road as well. Imagine accessing some of the stuff online at 10 or 11. Not good.

There has been a fair bit of Garda recruiting in the last three years, as for the scandals very few Gardai are willing to speak out, hardly surprising given the culture within AGS.

The trouble is the judicial system

    - the Gardaí are by Global standards not that bad a Force

I think shambolic mismanagement is their Achilles Heel rather than Corruption
Certainly there are times you hear about sentencing decisions that make no sense - it sometimes seems obvious that judges are looking at ways to try to help the convicted criminals re-habilitate rather than taking a broader view point around protecting society and making significant examples "pour encourager les autres", making it clear that crime doesn't pay.

The criminal elements have no fear of An Garda Siochana any more.

Waving their iphones in their faces, claiming "assault" and noting their badge numbers.

It didn`t happen in the old days.

Criminals were in fear of An Gardai.

They should never have reduced the height requirement and physical build requirement.

I note that someone mentioned the fitness regime or test. If you work in An Garda Siochana surely you have some personal responsibility to stay fit & healthy cut back on the booze etc if needed.

Whenever I'm up in Dublin I've noticed quite a few overweight Gardai on the beat, people in the Defence Forces need to keep themselves in good shape, why not members of AGS?
