This development was inevitable since the acquital of the protest "leadership". Why did it take so long, given that it was not contested by the state?

Why? Up against the full resources of the State, including a police force which seemed intent on securing a conviction by whatever means necessary. A democrat should be very concerned that the police would treat a parliamentarian in that way. Your view of the parliamentarian should not be relevant.

Nor should the rule of law be accepted as something to try your hand and see how it goes.

This is why there is no anti corruption culture in Ireland. Because you have eejits who are looking at a case like this and wondering did the tax payer foot the bill because a pointless case was prosecuted.

Thanks be there wasting off public funds isn't actually a concern for such people cause otherwise they'd be on our side

Power trumps their concern for public money.

They do, all the time. Anyway, the real point is, there isn't a bottomless pit available to enrich the lawyers and the judiciary forever and a day with fabricated proscecutions and fabricated defences all existing simply to make a very few people a very lot of money.

No idea what your point is. I'm just saying, the entire episiode from protest to final court decision probably transferred a sizeable chunk of wedge from potentially very worthwhile uses straight into the equally sizeable pockets of our friends in the legal game/business and paid for some nice champagne and Michelin Star dinners. That's the basic net effect.
