€32m. tax evasion, one law for the law ?

I'm a bit confused here. My reading of the solicitors scandal is that they spirited away €32m. to avoid tax, are reprimanded by their peers, paid up what's owed, continue to work in the legal profession, but will not appear in court. How fair is that when you have TV licence dodgers being jailed or public servants losing their jobs if as much as €10 goes missing .

I was wondering about that too. I can only assume that the revenue commissioners haven't moved in yet. Maybe they were waiting for the law society to finish their work. But presumably they will ....

Actually, it seems they have settled with the revenue ....

This is rather disturbing on many levels. Not least the amounts of money they were trousering from the state. 32 million over three years!

You have to wonder if there is any level of tax evasion that would warrant criminal charges ??

or any level of oversight that let this go on for so long. RTE said their main clients were 'Health Boards'? Aren't they in the tax withholding system?

It seems decidedly odd that these two chancers have not been struck off for good.

I have not read the papers this morning but I would make a guess that the RC had not yet investigated them or asked for returns for the period in question and that this one was nipped in the bud before it happened.

TBH I doubt any Government Agency would employ them again in future -

Imagine the uproar if they did!

do you think this government is worried about public uproar?

    they've got no shame.
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

I think they have been made scapegoats of by the Law Society, because of the present climate over Lynn et al. They're no saints, but how many who have reached settlements with the Revenue, paid penalties and interest, (huge sums in many cases0 have had their names published, been told they cant work for the next year.

Its too late now for the Law Society to start operating a zero tolerance policy.

Scapegoats ? , they got away very lightly. Law investigating law and deciding punishment is too much of the old boys network in action. They should be slopping out every morning for a few years and would be if they came from a working class background .
