Church of Ireland Gazette opposses Bill of Rights

CofI opposses Bill of Rights for the North - says it is political and should be a UK thing! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7168142.stm

Strange that a church that professes itself to be "of Ireland", dissociates itself from its co-religionists in the South when it suits!

Seems highly political to me - and make its "of Ireland" claim a nonsense.

I tried the Church of Ireland Gazette (online) but couldn't find the article.

""There are those in the Stormont establishment who want a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland, as opposed to the UK as a whole, because they want Northern Ireland to relate more closely to the Republic of Ireland than to the rest of the UK," it said."

It's a complete nonsense of an article. The writer is obviously some sort of ukup nut. The whole point of the legislative authority is that the six can create its own legal identity separate from the rest of the UK. If it feels that a bill of rights is necessary (like most democratic countries) then it should go right ahead. The failure of the UK parliament should not prevent the NI parliament going down that road.

    The point:
"There are those in the Stormont establishment who want a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland, as opposed to the UK as a whole, because they want Northern Ireland to relate more closely to the Republic of Ireland than to the rest of the UK,"

suggests that the person either suffers severe paranoia or is just an idiot. How exactly would a bill of rights accomplish any such thing.

You're making up badly written nonsense out of thin air and then arguing against it. Brilliant

The article is obvioulsy motivated by extremist unionist opinion and is an insult to members of the Church of Ireland who are Irish Republicans. Anglicanism is terribly tied up in politics and it inevitably affect's that Church's ability to be objective about anything.
