According to tomorrow's SBP there have been 73 homocides so far this year which exceeds last year's total of 68. 2007 is the most violent year in Ireland since the Civil War in the 1920's.

more cops is only half the answer, social engineering coupled with prison reform is also just as important. Using our prisons as a dustbin for the mentally ill and those with drug & alcohol addictions only makes the problem worst. We need to get tougher yes but more importantly smarter. This approach has been shown to work in Denmark, Finland etc while the more cops, more prison ONLY approach has been shown to fail in the UK and USA. In 1980 there were 500k in prison in the US today there are 2 Million and crime is rising. While in Denmark and Finland crime and the numbers in Prison is falling. Tougher and smarter is the only way.
Well they don't come any more tougher on crime than Saudi Arabia, yet homocide rates there are similar to the 26 Counties (per capita).Originally Posted by moloney

Are the SBP trying to suggest that 10 years of that FF/PD Zero Tolerance has been an abject failure? Shame on them.
Even at that we are are still among the lowest of murder rates in the world.
Although the rececent spate of gun crime is a worrying trend.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.
2007 = 73 and counting
2006 = 68
2005 = 54
last two years is a very big jump but huge relative growth since the 1990's

No. But they are,as the tip of the iceberg, probably as good an indicator as any of whether violent crime is going up or down.Originally Posted by lostexpectation

The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.
