The only way to deal with heavily armed criminals is with force. Communities no longer have access to this so it is surely the state's duty to do so. There is a conflict on the left, however, between support for "community action" including I presume the use of force, and a generalised leftist wringing of wrists at the sort of force used for example in Lusk.

The idiots in Lusk were given a chance to drop the weapon and stand still & they chose to be brave (and stupid). They paid the price. I have no sympathy for them whatsoever. My sympathy and empathy is with the Detective Garda who had to pull the trigger.

what do you mean, "communities no longer have access to this"? communities in ireland never had access to force, unless your referring to the terrorists in the north whom "protected" their own communities

also i believe its been proven time and time again that force only begets more force which begets more force, etc,etc

well thats certainly true i don't, least that i know of, however its hardly nonsense now is it ? unless your saying that the answer to the problem is either:-

    a) armed vigilantes / local activists / terrorists (call them what you want) enforcing their own will in the areas, sure they may get rid of the drug dealers for a while but at what cost and what impact on the community.

    b) arming the cops and them getting more aggressive to boot, thus leading to the drug dealers and other criminals arming more and part's of Dublin will start resembling South Central LA in short order.

now are you seriously saying that either of those are desirable options ?

It is not too long ago that Dublin communities used force against drug dealers. Historically Irish people have often used force. Perhaps the Land War may ring a bell with you.

In that scenario the communities themselves are easily identified and are ripe for retribution. Any Justice Minister under pressure because of widespread drug dealing and gangland killings can thus divert attention by concentrating on the community response rather than what provoked the community.
Any community initatives to tackle crime should be done in support of and in conjunction with the Gardai.
