Paul William's critically acclaimed documentary Battle for the Gas Fields got to the heart of the matter - a bunch of layabout crusties engaging in criminal damage and intimidating people trying to go about their work. Shame the protesters and organised criminals have cost the State €14.5 million.

At least the economic activity and resulting tax returns generated by multinationals goes someway towards paying for the protesters lifestyle in filthy camps and social welfare, and the cost of upholding their "rights".

Ok. Lets see if you know any of this

How much do oil companies actually pay in taxes?
How much royaltys do they pay?

How do you know the people down there protesting the violation of their private property rights are on welfare and how many are on welfare?

25-26% once the exploration and development costs have been recovered.

The courts dont agree with you about rights being violated.

I dont imagine crusties living in camps for months on end engaging in criminal behaviour are holding down any sort of jobs or paying tax.

THE Paul Williams, great but almost universally unknown documentary maker? Oh him! For a moment I thought you were referring to the sensationalist "Crime Correspondent" tabloid hack.

There are no profitable oil e&p companies is Ireland.

No Royalties are paid as no gas has come ashore.

Shell and its partners have full legal rights to explore and produce gas.

So what is the deal should Shell discover significant oil and/or gas reserves? How much per barrel or by volume will the Irish state get out of what is pumped ashore?
The voters in any democracy are never wrong. Where the voters are declared mad it is because their political class has driven them mad. They are, however, still always right.
