16 year old girl shot dead while sitting in a car in Tallaght

I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread created on this. Is it because she is believed to be a traveller or are people nervous about commenting on a murder?

I suspect that if the victim had been a girl from a more affluent part of Dublin, or not a traveller, there might already be a thread on it.

    From RTE.ie:

A teenage girl has died in hospital following a shooting incident in Tallaght in Dublin last night.

The 16-year-old girl was one of four people sitting in a car at Brookview Way at around 10.30pm.

Gardaí believe another car pulled up beside it and a shot, or shots, were fired into the first car.

The girl was taken to Tallaght Hospital where she died in the early hours of this morning.

SiL, it may be that people are only hearing about it now.
I heard about it on the news at 7am, didn't think it warranted a thread as it really was unclear what had happened.

If she was a traveller, so what?

It is still tragic, like every other death at the hands of these type of thugs.

My traveller comment is based on what I have been hearing from people away from P.ie. Already I've heard comments that 'sure it was one of their own' and 'they'll take care of it themselves' and 'that's one less to pay for'.

These comments were from apparently intelligent, ordinary people. I just found it awful that people could feel that way about the killing of a 16 year old girl, in such a manner.

I wouldn't have expected you to create a thread Astral, as I know you put time and effort into your threads (more than I do), but there are many around here who throw up threads about the most trivial things - I guess that's why I was surprised.

I suspect you're right in many ways; however, a part of me wonders if this kind of personal tragedy really belongs in a politics forum?

Looks like they've been found out. You'll know the next time they comment on such things that they should be taken with a grain of salt.

I can understand that point of view, but the reaction to the killing of a 16 year old girl will be interesting; particularly when compared to the reaction to events outside a south Dublin nightclub in the recent enough past.

If it had been a 16 year old boy, nobody would have raised an eyebrow. There's an assumption being made in the media that because the person that was shot was female, then they must have been an innocent victim.

Ah, 'one of ours' versus 'one of theirs'?

Surely innocent untill proven otherwise. Especially within 10 hours of the incident.

What would constitute a non-innocent victim? We don't have a death penalty, so I'm curious to hear what would warrant being blown away by a shot-gun.
