The names Lenihan, Brian Lenihan, Brian Lenihan Jr

Is he been sent to the slaughter with this post? many in the past have called this one of the toughest posts in government, will he survive?

It has slaughtered some (McDowell, Owen) who were simply not up to ministerial standard in terms of ability anyway (ignore McD's self promotion, he's only pass-student material at best) but it didn't leave a mark on more able ministers, like John The Gunner O'Donoghue.
It'll be a breeze to someone of B.L.'s ability.

Its an error to assume a legal background is necessary or even desirable for this position. The portfolio is Justice not Law and that's what sunk McDowell. He believed that once he addressed a matter legally the politics of it would naturally fall into play. It doesn't work like that. For example take the case of the rapist and the cigarette. He's set free for rape but imprisoned for flicking a cigarette at his victim. That's legal justice but its not political justice and both are required for society.

What rights did YOU lose. Unless your intending on drug-running or armed robbery. You could say he re-inforced your right NOT to be a victim of crime. Or if you just like a fag with your pint. EDIT: In fairness, McDowell slaughtered Mcdowell, not the Justice Dept.

I heard John O' Donoohue was a better Justice spokesperson than a Justice Minister.

Brian Lenihan will come out of Justice a fully polished senior minister and will be Deputy FF leader when Cowen takes the helm. The man is more than able.

McDowell was hardly a success in fighting organised crime.

And as for all that data retention stuff - who cares? Digital Rights Ireland?

So if you haven't been visiting any dodgy websites recently or called any iffy individuals then you've no need to worry.

Well, how about the right to silence? what about testimony being admissable into evidence if it is under duress? are these things true

Conor and Brian are very different personalities and should not be confused but I'm sure you didn't Riadach but you just wanted to get the jibe in.

Brian will make an excellent Minister. He is the smartest politician I have ever met and gets to know his brief backwards and forwards. I hope he'll reverse some of the more stupid legislation introduced by McD and actually tackle crime rather than giving Gardaí unnecessary powers. As said by Nedz McD was more into self promotion than actually employing measures to reduce crime. Lenihan is a much better operator and will make a much greater impact.
