Gardai, publicans and after hours drink

Gardai seem to turn a blind eye to enforcing the licincing laws, also, where are they when a person is already drunk and is served more drink in a licenced premises. Perhaps the publicans too should clean up their act.

When Michael McDowell tried to introduce cafe-style bars, which would have been a great idea, the vintners association were up in arms. When Michael Martin brought in the smoking laws, which have been a great success, the vintners association were up in arms, yet it is a widely known fact that certain licenced premises once 11.30 comes, close their doors and put back the ashtrays.

Today, I was listening to Liveline where I heard the mother of a 15-year-old girl speak harrowingly about the death of her daughter when she was murdered by a drunk who was refused drink after he had been drinking with a friend of his all day.

Still, this man was allowed to get into a car, and kill this girl with a club. I think it is about time that publicans and bar staff if they see a person they think has had too much to drink get into a car and drive home should 'inform' on this person. I know to 'inform' on a person is still viewed as a taboo subject, but maybe, publicans and bar staff will be saving lives by acting on this.

many pubs develop an infrormal relationship with the local gardai for situations like this. i know its standard practace in the pub i work in to bar anyone who makes a habit of drunk driving and have a word with the cops about serial offenders. and for the record cafe bars were a bad idea which would only serve to raise the cost of drink

I don't know much about the bar trade, but how could more drinking outlets raise the price of drink? Surely, the vintners were up in arms because the very same cafe-bars would be too much competition for them, thus they would have to lower the price of drink in order to compete

at the minute the pub industry is at its most competitive in years. the main source of competition is not pub against pub but people drinking at home. this is shown by the increase in revenue in companies like woodies. the reason that cafe bars were unworkable and guiness were against the propasal was that they would have to clean the beer lines in the new outlets which would raise costs higher than added income raiseing the price of drink.

Even without the cafe-bars, Guinness went ahead and put 5c on a pint and then the poor publican in the most "competetive" of markets went ahead and slapped another 5c on on the pint. I wonder would the vintners have done that if they had to compete against cafe-bars?

there in a market. the cost base of goods went up so they had to raise prices. pubs also raised prices to stay in the black. it was bad timing but necessary. everyone is in business to turn a profit.

What about the cost of soft drinks in pubs? they seem extraordinarily high for no other reason then taking advantage of a more aware sensibility of designated driving. yes a few pubs did promotions with giving free soft drinks, but not many of them?

I think we should give some serious consideration to finding QuietKerryman a hobby.

So thats why the vintners were up in arms over the proposed introduction of cafe-bars. The
reason being that they wanted to have a monopoly? You learn something new every day.
