I am from the area where this happened and the man is known to the Gardai to have a mental illness. It is some form of autism. So the Gardai knew well who they were speaking to. They were well out of order in their treatment of the man no matter how irratating they find dealing with him.
There is a terrible culture in the gardai of treating members of the public with poor manner. The gardai do not seem to be taught the importance of treating the public with courtesy.Is there not a Garda charter or code of conduct they must follow??
The police in Northern Ireland despite all the difficulties with policing are much better with dealing with the public with common courtesy.
This garda and the garda recording it on phone deserve disciplinary action.The member of the public deserves a bit of respect. He has a mental disorder and due to this he has some obsession with the law, he needs proper care so this can be dealt with in a proper and dignified way.

Very true. If, as you point out, that the Garda in question actually knew that Brendan Campbell has a mental condition, his actions were even more disgraceful than would seem at first.

There is no doubt that there is a "comedian" culture within the younger members of the Gardai. I personally saw a man fainting in the public area of a Garda station. Instead of automatically going into "First Aid mode", one young Garda kicked him in the back shouting "Wake up, wake up" while his colleague laughed and said "Well done there Doctor C***y" (referring to the kicking Garda).

the fact that they had no problem taping the abuse and putting it on the internet says a great deal to me about the absolute impunity they think they have

Of course, it shows nothing of the sort. I feel sorry for the gardai in these situations.

Judge for yourself by watching the video. The cops showed up with a digger and a container, and tried to access the pier at Pollotomish by crossing private land.
The land owner sought legal advice and tried to speak to the Garda supt., but he was ignored.

When local people blocked the gate by standing at it the Garda supt. instructed the digger driver to push the gate back, regardless of the danger. 20 people were injured.

Watched the youtube clip. Bit silly actually but good to see them having a nice time. i think the Gardai uniform is really crap. I think they need a makeover.
