    Reintroduction of Internment

Given that the most intransingent Unionists (as represented by Ian Paisley and his followers) are now fully committed to power sharing with the minority community in NI for the first time in history, surely an argument could be made for interning without trial those who continue to advocate violence for political objectives. Lock them up indefinitely until such time as they grow up and renounce political violence for good.

It is clear that if these diehards are allowed to continue unchecked then there's a very real possibility that they will destroy what is as yet a very fragile peace. And this clearly is their objective.

The question is: if internment were to be reintroduced, who of the regular contributors to P.ie should be locked up?

Obviously, poor old Cael would have to be one of the first to go into a modern equivalent of the Kesh. However, if so interned then I fear the poor fellow would grow his hair long, start to write poetry as maudlin as it is bad, and eventually go on hunger strike and die a martyr's death.

If this happened, of course, then in a few years time we'd have to listen to a fresh new crop of jolly green gob************************es telling us all about his heroic exploits and getting their nuts off on what a larger than life character he was.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more unbearable such an outcome becomes. On reflection then, best to leave young Cael unfettered in his own little universe!

Apart from Cael then, what other regular P.iers would be candidates for a stint in the Kesh?

Apart from the fact that internment without trial is in breach of the basic human rights principles it has in the past also been a breeding ground for recruits.

And then those interned go to the European courts of Justice and win millions in compensation.

No, DeValera interned a bunch of Nazi sympathising RA men (my enemy's enemy is my friend merchants) during WWII and it proved quite effective. In fact, not only did Dev intern them but he also executed a couple of them for treason. However, I'm a non-violent sort and wouldn't recommend going that far!

You would think that some people would learn through the past mistakes of history, internment has never worked, all it ever did was stall the conflict at times, and the last time it was used was totaly ineffective and acted as a recruitment bonus for the IRA.
