    Mobile phones in prisons

Heard an interesting discussion on the Joe Duffy show today when a prisoner from the prison in Portlaoise serving a nine year sentence rang to have a chat with a pal who was on air-just wondered how he manages to top up his phone when he runs out of credit. Do the prison authotities make the necessary arrangements for him?.

How is this related to Justice ? I presume some one on the outside purchases credit & texts him the top up number or something similar.

Was it said what he was in for?
As far as I'm concerned, it's not just a matter of how he buys credit - people who are locked up for serious offences (and someone serving a nine year term probably was...) really shouldn't be allowed to have mobile phones in prison if only for the reason that it allows them to continue directing and engaging in criminal activities.

..or maybe he has monthly contract paid by a friend or relative. Hence no need for top ups.

As far as I know, mobiles are not allowed by inmates. There is a proposal to install a system in prisons which will prevent phones inside the prison being able to make/receive calls.

There is? Do you have any evidence of this proposal?

I work in the industry (not the prison industry ), and looked at a proposal for one.

Also, a quote from a speech made by mcdowel at the last agsi conference:-

"Mr McDowell told the conference last night that he shared the AGSI's concern over criminals directing gangland crime from prison.

He said such prisoners would in future be segregated and have their visits taped.

He said that 600 mobile phones had been confiscated in prisons and a blocking system is being installed in the Midlands Prison, which when tested will be installed in all prisons."

That was quite an interesting show . Provo spokes person Christy Burke vanished from the airwaves without explanation prior to the jailed hood phoning up . One of Dublins top crims , yer man Fatpuss , came on air during the discussion when Burke was being interviewed . The discussion was about this crim and his associates links to the provos themselves . Christy was denying any links to organised crime in Dublin , the just disappeared without explanation or even excusing himself when Fatpuss phoned in . It was during the cross examination of Fat puss that thecrim phoned in from his cell to say they were friends and werent involved in any feud . Cue several fat warders choking on their tea and biscuits whilst listening to wireless ..
Fat puss also called Paul Williams a "lying cnut" live on air . Tsk tsk

He was obviously copped by the prison officers though, because at the end he was whispering urgently down the phone that he had to go...and I don't think he needed to slop out! Phones are not allowed in prisons but then, neither are drugs
