    Criminal Justice Bill Passes Dail

Looking at this I was wondering, why did Fine Gael and Labour abstain from the vote. Was it to protest at the tanaiste's haste in trying to pass it, despite generally supporting the bill itself or does mass abstenation from votes happen often

So as not to split the FG-LAB-GR axis. Plus i imagine with this coalition in place, most of this bill may be renegotiated. McDowell took a lot of ideas from FG in the first place ala Electronic Tagging. So let FF have it. How many PDs i wonder......

Im sure we'll hear whats wrong with the bull is due course.

I suppose they never want it said they voted agaist tougher crime laws. This is about the eleventh piece of criminal justice legislation in last ten years. There's note doubt it gives gardai addtional powers but whether these powers will in practice be effectual is unknown...I'd say it's unlikely when dealing with hardened criminals.

However the most concerning part legislation is the sentacing element. This Bill proposes the most sweeping changes to sentancing policy in the history of the state. It is extremely disappointing that this element has not been debated for longer and through wider circles.

All parties are far too concerned with the election now than they are with their full time jobs and are failing to give this bill enough thoughtful debate.
