Top Traffic Corps Garda arrested for drink driving!

    • A Garda Superintendent in charge of a Regional Traffic Division has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Superintendent Jim Fitzgerald, who appointed to the Regional Traffic Division less than a month ago, was arrested in Galway last night.

He was driving an official unmarked garda car at the time.

He was taken to Loughrea Garda Station after he was reported by a member of the public, but it is understood he refused to take the test.

He was released but it is understood that proceedings will be taken against him.

Under the new Road Traffic Legislation refusing to take a test for drink-driving carries a disqualification of three years off the road.

Whoever arrested him has just flushed there career down the toilet. I respect them for their principled stance though.

I think it sends a clear message no one, even a senior garda is above the law. That said, I guess people should be careful in what they say as the matter is still sub judice.

It's anything but a fair cop in Mid Ulster.

be interesting to see if he's prosecuted or gets let off the hook by the DPP like last time when the armed gardai who were meant to be guarding the American embassy got pissed and started a fight with his partner over a round and then decided to drive home before his shift was over.

still cant belive the reason the DPP gave for not pressing charges was "no one complained"
