Bit of a laugh, this "he nearly defamed me" stuff. Sort of leaves Sean-Bhean bhoct's 'innocent until proven guilty' argument a little short of wind.

This Dermot 'nearly defamed' Ahern will have as much reason to regret his silly remark (though not as much as Willie 'I'm a victim' O'Dea, who'll be haunted until the end of his political days by his remark).

In short, to score a political hit, you don't need to have your victim tried and convicted in court.

The Ayatollah was certainly hit by Flanagan, though not half as hard as O'Dea hit himself.

I don't think that weakens my argument at all to be honest. I mean, you, nor Flanagan, can prove that Ahern had involvement in this no more than I can prove he didn't. But you can be sure that if he's talking about publishing the findings of the report at this early stage there's not a chance he'll be implicted in any way.

And speaking of political hits, the said report will launch one back towards Flanagan. Also, Sargent himself has done much to nuetralise Flanagans accusation.

I agree with you re O'Dea, but I can't see Aherns remark being remembered by the general electorate in the long-term.
