Hate to break it to you Nature Boy, but we're now in the 21st century. Shotgun weddings are no longer the only solution.

Jason raises a very important issue, which we've all heard loads about in recent years, and yet nothing seems to be changing with it. Does anyone know what the different party's policies are on this?

Because Dev's constitution put a huge emphasis on the mother's right to stay at home and be with her kids, as part of the basis of the traditional family unit. But now in a Post-Catholic Ireland, those particular clauses of the constitution are being interpreted for the exclusive benefit of the custody rights of the mother, in the case that the parents are not living together. That element of the constitution has not evolved with the times.

I have heard of them and such marriages are immoral* and invalid.
And its ridiculous and insulting to think any girl would sooner get married than live alone. Sometimes I believe it may be better for one parent to look after the child, especially if one spouse has problems.

*I now await the descending wrath of the usual suspects who will be suitably outraged that I have brought up the argument of morality onto a politics forum.

    why

Look they way i see it i could walk away a not care but the thing is it is a serious issue and the goverment off this country should make new laws in relation to this,as far as i see we are coming into a generation off children without one off the parents, and what doeas this do to children well i would say ask them,u can see the problem beginning ,first with male suicide then
underage drinking with children, and so on,we have to start looking at the roots of this and make this knowing to the country and get something done before to late,as it is very important.AS they say life begins at birth and should contine with joy and peace for all,

Obviously your parents didn't find contraception so easy to use or we'd have been spared you.

Only widowers tend to be single-fathers; at least in the Nordic countries. It is extremely rare that in the case of divorce the father would get the custody of the children. It is not fair in most cases and it is often down to the fact that the overwhelmelming majority of the social workers are women and they believe women in the rows of divorce.
