    Would you slap your child?

Anyone watching the discussion on the Late Late on whether or not it's right to spank bold children?

I've heard that some people want this outlawed.

    What do people think?

Yes, it is a parents responsibility to instruct a child and to administer discipline as appropriate.

However, one must be concious that the child realises why they are being punished, and should respond positively to it.

Abuse of a child is wrong however.

I remember when I was young, not only did my own parents discipline me, but other parents on the estate did if they felt it necessary

    Never did me any harm

If it is ok to slap a child for doing something bold then surely it should be ok to slap an adult for doing something wrong even though they are older and have a better comprehension as to what is right or wrong.

I was slapped as a child - didn't bother me too much. I know when my folks decided to 'ground' me or to use various other sanctions they hit home, (excuse the pun), a lot quicker .

UI think the reason adults often slap is either because the action of the child has frightened them and they want to press home the severity of the action or they lack the ability to adequately explain to a child the error of their ways – either way a little education would go along way to resolving this problem.

Ah, I well remember as a young scamp being caught in the act by local parents, given a clip round the ear and dragged up to me ma, all tears and snotters.

I was about 13 when they banned corporal punishment in schools, was on the receiving end of a variety of rulers, leather straps and even sally rods at one time or another. And I was a fairly well-behaved child! We all got a bit of the lash back then. I'm fairly sure my generation haven't all grown up to be psychopathic child abusers because of it....

There's a few childer running about my estate at present that could do with a slap. I would slap my own. Would Risteard use 'controlled and disciplined force' if he ever had any?

I left national school about 12 years ago and even though it was illegal, the Master used to lacerate us with a steel ruler for misbehaviour. The parents were complicit, and gave consent. Doesn't happen now though...
