McCabe killers lose appeal for freedom

Two IRA members jailed for killing Detective Garda Jerry McCabe today lost their bid for freedom.

Pearse McAuley and Jeremiah Sheehy, who are serving 14 and 12 years respectively for the manslaughter of the senior policeman, had claimed the detention breached their human rights.

We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

That's strange. I still don't understand why murderers of RUC officers in the North are released, while murderers of Gardaí aren't. There's a strange attitude to this sort of thing in the Republic. We seem to expect the North to go a lot further than we ever would.

Take the Sinn Féin issue, for example. It seems somehow hypocritical that Fianna Fáil and the PDs would refuse to go into government with Sinn Féin, but insist that the DUP does.

Of course, these are different situations and I suppose it could be argued that the North has to go further than the Republic, since it's a problem more relevant to them. Still, it's interesting.

Fair enough, but would you not concede that their continued detention is hypocritical in the extreme given what some victims' families in the Six Counties have had to swallow?

THey apologised for all innocent victims and civilians killed or injured due to their actions. What's your point?
