That's the traditional orthodox Republican view of what happened: you had 1916 and the Tan War fighting for a free, secular, socially progressive and non-sectarian Republic. And then you had a British-backed counter-revolution installing a highly conservative, laissez-faire, ultra-Catholic reactionary regime, which ran Ireland until the early 60s/early 90s/till today, but which was explicitly not what people had been fighting for in 1916-20.

It is a term being adopted to describe the founders of our state. I wish to add that it is regrettful that the government found it necessary to take these extreme mearures.

May their souls rest in peace.

Surely this thread should read "executed" rather than murdered.

The rebels were trying to overthrow a democratically-elected government, after all.

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

While I agree that Ireland is a highly conservative, laissez-faire, ultra-Catholic reactionary regime from 1921-present...I'm not sure how the elected government could be described as "counter-revoloutionaries"

In that they fought against the ideals of the revolution and established a state directly contrary to the ideals of the tan war, the 1916 rising, the Proclomation of Independence, the Democratic Programme...
    Revolution not devolution.

    Yes.

However, the people you mention who were behind the 1916 rebellion were at the extremity of Irish politics. The counter-revolution after 1921 saw the re-emergence of mainstream Irish political belief.

This is normal in post-revolution societies.

The only aspect that is unique is the quality of the individuals concerned. Ireland was well served by the first Free State government.

this is not true. what you would call the third Dαil was not elected, and when elections where held they were contested on a lie.
