Lol, I'm glad to see I've started an argument while I was quietly eating my sandwich outside!

I certainly do not consider Catholics to be second class citizens. I have personal opinions on faith, its causes and its uses, but I don't consider any person as below me for any reason, including their religious beliefs.

And thanks for the lovely compliments!

All those who feel they have the 'right' belief system are in fact claiming that others who don't share their beliefs are not at the same level of awareness as them. This simple truth about human nature explains much in our history and why people with officially 'christian' morals feel they can treat others as animals or lesser beings.

The sooner religious rubbish is taken out of the administrative affairs of state everywhere the better off we'll all be.

I would add my compliments to Sarahj.
And this post sums up a lot of my own personal feelings on religious belief.

I agree with every word of Sarahj's insightful post. There is no precept of Christianity which would justify treating others, including non-Christians, as a sub-class or sub-human (conversely, there are many precepts enjoining believers to do the exact opposite). To dehumanise 'the other' is an unfortunate human trait, not a religious injunction.

You suggest that people of faith think of non-believers as not being on "the same level of awareness as them." That may be somewhat true. However, I have lost count of the number of times non-religious posters have accused me of being deluded, incapable of critical thought, irrational, illogical, etc, for holding beliefs they themselves do not share. It would seem that what you referred to was, once again, a human trait/instinct and not one only observable among believers.

I think that too amounts to treating others who don't share your beliefs, as being, in the words of Captain Con, "not at the same level of awareness" as you.
